A wide black and white view of a Panama town spread across a hillside, filed here because of its link to Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. Panama was a central concern of his administration: after the isthmus broke from Colombia in 1903 with American backing, the United States secured rights to build a canal across it, and construction began in 1904. A scene like this one shows the kind of terrain and settlement that surrounded that project, and the panoramic format conveys how the land rises and how the town fits into it.
