A town sits at the edge of a deep excavation in this wide view, the kind of cut that carved a path for a waterway through hard ground. The gallery groups it with pictures from Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, when the United States took over and pushed forward the building of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt's administration made the canal one of its signature undertakings, and the broad frame shows how the earthwork dwarfed the settlement beside it. Look closely at the scale of the cut against the surrounding buildings and land.
