A scarecrow stands in for a continent in this 1943 woodcut, titled *Scarecrow of Europe*, a figure of straw and cloth set up to frighten. Fiske Boyd made the print during the Second World War, when much of Europe lay under Nazi occupation and American artists often used bold, simplified imagery to make political points. The title suggests the image reads as a hollow display of menace rather than real strength. The date and attribution come from a caption card and have not been independently confirmed, so treat those details with some care.
