The caption names headgear worn by the Mashukulumbwe, a people mentioned in colonial-era records of Northern Rhodesia, and places the scene near the Kafue River, though a question mark shows the location was uncertain. The print dates to between 1890 and 1923, a period of expanding British administration in the region, when travel writers and photographers often recorded African dress as a curiosity. It belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, whose American travel writers used such images to illustrate their accounts.
