Charles G. Dawes, the Chicago banker who had been the first director of the federal Bureau of the Budget, appears in this July 1924 portrait, taken the year he was nominated as Calvin Coolidge's running mate. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the 1910s and 1920s, made thousands of glass negatives of officials and public figures, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and other blemishes from deterioration in the original coatings are visible across the plate. The name and date come from the studio's notes and have not been independently verified.
