Woburn, Massachusetts, in 1883 was still a town rather than a city, a status it would not take until 1888, and it sat in Middlesex County about ten miles north of Boston. Its economy rested largely on leather, with tanneries lining the banks of the Aberjona River, while shoe and boot shops and smaller manufactories employed many townspeople. The Boston and Lowell Railroad ran through the community, carrying hides, finished leather, and goods toward Boston markets and bringing commuters and visitors in. Town meeting governed local affairs, and residents would have known Woburn as a working manufacturing community with active churches and civic institutions gathered around its center.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Woburn, Massachusetts, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
