The record places this view at the Southwest Pass lighthouse, one of the navigation markers at the mouth of the Mississippi River where the main channel meets the Gulf of Mexico. Its low, marshy setting made it a frequent target for storms and shifting sandbars, and lighthouses there helped pilots and merchant ships find the deep-water route into New Orleans. The title is cut off at the month, so the exact date of the view is unclear. Still, the picture shows how isolated and exposed such stations were, with the tower standing alone against open water and sky.
