The rolling fields in this wide view match the open ground west of Seminary Ridge, where Confederate troops advanced on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, in the assault later known as Pickett's Charge. The road running through the farmland is likely the Emmitsburg Road, which crossed the attack route and was a key landmark during the fighting. The photograph dates to 1918, more than fifty years after the battle, when the battlefield was being preserved as a national park. Its sepia tone and panoramic frame show how quiet and open the ground had become long after the fighting ended.
