Ovaltine's pitch here is breakfast: a family gathered for a morning meal, with the malt drink presented as a route to "good health." The brand grew out of a malt-extract product developed in Switzerland in the early 1900s and was sold in Britain from a factory in Hertfordshire, where it became one of the best-known nourishing drinks of the twentieth century. Advertisements like this one leaned on domestic scenes to suggest that a cup of Ovaltine was a sensible, wholesome part of everyday family life. Its wording and layout also show how drink advertising of the period sold health and respectability as much as taste.
