The title "J.N. Davis" comes from a note the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the record marks it as unverified, so the subject's identity remains uncertain. The 1925 date is an estimate drawn from other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made a large body of work on glass negatives in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave this example to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
