A cowboy hauling against a roped steer is the focus of this color lithograph, which presents a spool of thread as strong enough to hold a working animal. Titled "Testing," the card promotes Clark's O.N.T. spool cotton, a product of the Clark thread firm, one of the large American makers of sewing thread in the late nineteenth century. Trade cards like this were handed out to shoppers and often kept as colorful keepsakes, and the ranch scene reflects the public fascination with the cattle range and the cowboy. The record dates the card to between 1875 and 1900.
