Stirring the Christmas pudding is a photograph of a wood engraving that ran in the Christmas supplement of Harper's Weekly on December 30, 1876, so the picture was already one step removed from life when it reached readers. The scene shows children gathered around a kitchen task that was a fixture of the holiday in Victorian households, when families took turns stirring a heavy suet pudding, often with a wish made as the batter was turned. Illustrations like this one helped shape a domestic image of Christmas that many American readers recognized from their own homes, and the photograph preserves that printed version for later study.
