Wilmington, Delaware, in 1874 was a busy industrial city on the Christiana River, where the du Pont powder works on the Brandywine and the city's shipyards, car shops and textile and iron works gave it a reputation for manufacturing. The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad had made the city a key stop on the main line between Philadelphia and Baltimore, and freight and passengers moved through its depots daily. Wilmington was also a place of sharp contrasts: its wealthy merchant and manufacturing families lived in brick homes near the city center, while many mill and shipyard workers, including a large number of immigrants from Ireland and Germany, crowded into smaller streets nearby. Residents of the day knew it as the chemical and industrial heart of Delaware, a city that still felt the effects of the Civil War and its divided loyalties.
