Alphonse Mucha designed this color lithograph in Paris, where F. Champenois printed it in 1903 to promote the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, which ran from April 30 to November 30, 1904. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 purchase, in which the United States acquired a vast territory from France, a link that connects the poster to the Jefferson presidency. Mucha, the Czech-born artist known for his Art Nouveau work in Paris, brought his decorative style to an American event, and the French lettering shows the poster's European origin. It is a useful example of how European design was enlisted to sell American spectacle to visitors.
