This photographic print pairs President William McKinley and Governor Theodore Roosevelt in a single composition, each shown as a bust inside a medallion, both turned to the left. The pairing dates the image to about 1900, when Roosevelt was governor of New York and was chosen as McKinley's running mate for the 1900 election. Roosevelt took the vice presidency in March 1901, and after McKinley was assassinated in September of that year, he became president. Portraits like this one, which joined the two men as a ticket, were common in campaign material, and they now record how closely the two were linked before Roosevelt's rise to the presidency.
