Roosevelt appears in a half-length pose turned to the left, a composition studio photographers favored for public men of the day. The picture dates to about 1900, the year he was governor of New York and then won the Republican nomination for vice president. It is a cabinet photograph, the sturdy mounted card format that families and admirers collected in large numbers, and its imprint credits the studio of George Prince, which marks it as a posed studio portrait rather than a candid shot.
