The reverse of the U.S. two-dollar bill carries John Trumbull's painting "Declaration of Independence," a scene of the Continental Congress's drafting committee presenting its work on June 28, 1776. The committee members pictured are Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston, gathered in the Philadelphia room where the document was submitted. Trumbull, who had witnessed some of the events he later depicted, painted the work over several decades, and it hangs in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The engraved version on the bill is a small, widely recognized rendering of that national origin story.
