Crate labels were the paper advertisements of the fruit trade, and this one is a lithographed design for apples, a fruit that was shipped in wooden crates from orchard districts to city markets across the country. Printed in bright color, labels like this were pasted onto the ends of crates so that a buyer could identify the grower, the variety, and the brand at a glance. Apple labels in particular often featured orchards, blossoms, and idealized rural scenes meant to suggest freshness and quality. Today they are prized as examples of commercial printing and as a record of how growers marketed their produce.
