Taken in 1895, the year Roosevelt became president of New York's Board of Police Commissioners, this photoprint predates his White House years by six years, so the "Pres." in its catalog title reflects his later reputation rather than his office at the time. The New York photographer Benjamin J. Falk made the image, and it was published in the October 1895 issue of *Celebrities* magazine. The print offers a glimpse of how Roosevelt was presented to the public during his reform-minded stint in city government.
