This glass negative is a portrait of William Howard Taft, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century. Taft served as the 27th president from 1909 to 1913 and later became Chief Justice of the United States in 1921, the only person to hold both offices. The record gives no date for the exposure, and the identification comes from caption data that has not been independently verified, so the occasion remains uncertain. Glass negatives like this one were prized for the fine detail they could hold when printed for newspapers.
