Made to promote *The Chap-Book*, a Chicago literary periodical from the publisher Stone & Kimball, this 1895 color poster is the work of Will H. Bradley, a leading American designer of the decade's decorative poster style. Bradley drew on Art Nouveau and British Arts and Crafts design, and his covers for the magazine helped make it recognizable on newsstands. An alternate title, *The Poet and His Lady*, points to the courtship and music themes, a romantic subject suited to a journal of new poetry and fiction.
