From the grounds of Fort Hamilton on the Brooklyn shore, this view looks across the Narrows, the strait that funnels ships into New York Harbor, toward the wooded heights of Staten Island. The fort guarded that passage, which gives the scene a quiet military edge beneath its peaceful harbor setting. Frances F. Palmer drew many views like this for Currier & Ives, whose hand-colored lithographs reached a wide public at modest prices. Its date of about 1861 places it in the year the Civil War began, when the harbor's defenses were newly important to the city.
