The record identifies the sitter as Maj. E.D. Cole, a title taken from the negative or caption card and not independently verified, and it gives no date. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899 to sell news pictures to newspapers. Bain's files grew into tens of thousands of negatives covering public figures, events and everyday subjects, and the glass plates were often captioned quickly for wire-service use. Because the caption is unconfirmed and the date is missing, the sitter's identity and the occasion are best treated as open questions.
