Alex. O. Levy's 1917 color lithograph, "The Cross and the Crusaders," takes its title from the medieval holy wars, linking wartime soldiers to a crusading defense of churches against German destruction. The comparison drew on the widespread Allied charge that German forces had damaged religious sites, most famously the cathedral at Reims, which was shelled beginning in 1914. Posters like this appeared as the United States entered the war in April 1917, and they framed the conflict as a moral struggle over civilization and liberty. The pairing of religious symbolism with a military theme shows how propaganda borrowed older ideas of holy war to make a modern conflict feel familiar.
