What sets this glass negative apart is its subject, Dr. J.A. Kierman of the Agriculture Department, recorded on September 17, 1924. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented federal officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made images like this one. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these glass plates are.
