A State Department employee named Nelson Johnson is the subject of this glass negative, dated June 29, 1925. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded government officials, public events and daily life in the capital in the early twentieth century, made it. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and part of its original caption has been scratched away, so the identification rests on the surviving label. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of its coating over the decades, which affects how the image looks today.
