Port Hudson, Louisiana, sits on high bluffs above a sharp bend of the Mississippi River, which made it a strong position for Confederate artillery during the Civil War. This color halftone reproduces a painting by E. Packbauer of a naval bombardment there, the kind of river fighting that Union gunboats and Confederate shore batteries carried on in 1863. Because it dates from about 1902, decades after the fighting, it shows how later artists and publishers pictured the war's river battles, with smoke, gun flashes, and dramatic water. It is also worth noticing how a painted scene was turned into a mass-printed halftone to reach a wider public.
