The Musical Fund Hall was built by the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia, a group of local musicians and music lovers who organized to aid ailing performers and their families. It served as the city's main concert room for much of the nineteenth century, hosting orchestral concerts, recitals, and public lectures. This engraving, dated between 1870 and 1900, shows the building as it looked in the decades after the Civil War, when Philadelphia's cultural life was centered on halls like this one. The print is part of the Library of Congress's collection of engravings from that period.
