This photograph shows the Opera House block in Mansfield, a borough in north-central Pennsylvania's Tioga County, during the years between 1900 and 1930. Such blocks were common in small American towns, where a commercial building housed shops on the street level and a large hall upstairs. The upper hall served as the town's main venue for traveling theater companies, lectures, concerts, and civic gatherings, so the building was often the social center of the community. Picture postcards and photographs like this one help show how these multi-use buildings shaped the streetscape before movie houses became common.
