This hand-colored lithograph shows the tomb at Mount Vernon, Virginia, where George Washington was laid to rest after his death there in December 1799. The original family vault was later replaced with a marble sarcophagus in the 1830s, and the site became a place of pilgrimage for Americans throughout the nineteenth century. The print was published by the New York firm Currier & Ives, whose workshops produced many views of national landmarks and famous figures for a popular market.
