A street banner at the corner of Broadway and Fourteenth Street promises a crossing "To Europe in sixty hours," a claim that would have drawn passersby in August 1873. The banner advertised The Daily Graphic, New York's first illustrated daily, which was building its own great balloon in the showroom of the Domestic Sewing Machine Company on the second and third floors. The stunt shows how newspapers of the period used spectacle to win readers, while ballooning and ocean travel were both on the public mind. The print comes from the Tissandier collection, named for the French aeronaut and writer Gaston Tissandier.
