Nathaniel Currier's lithograph gathers the nation's presidents into a single printed record, a format that let a family or a tavern owner display the whole line of office holders at once. The print was issued in New York around 1844, a year of a sharply contested presidential election, when cheap lithographs like this one were a common way for citizens to follow politics and show their party loyalties. Lithography was then a relatively new, affordable process, and Currier's firm produced its work in large numbers for a broad public. Its catalog entry, number 5302 in the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, places it among the many political and patriotic prints the firm issued during this decade.
