Rather than a single leader, this lithograph presents the whole line of American presidents, which sets it apart from the many portrait prints of Washington that sold in the same decades. Nathaniel Currier, working in New York, produced hand-colored lithographs like this one for a broad middle-class market, where a set of national leaders on the wall signaled patriotic taste. Dated to about 1842, it appeared during John Tyler's first year and a half in office, after William Henry Harrison's death in April 1841, when the succession of chief executives was fresh in the public mind.
