Bertrand Russell, the British philosopher, mathematician and later peace activist, is shown here in a bust-length portrait in profile, facing right, with a pipe in hand. Russell was a central figure in analytic philosophy, co-writing "Principia Mathematica" with Alfred North Whitehead and later earning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. The caption card does not record a date, so the sitting is best placed by his appearance and the era of his public prominence, which spanned the first half of the twentieth century and beyond. The pipe was a familiar part of his public image, and the portrait's profile view gives it a quiet, contemplative character.
