Here the science of plant life takes human form, so the title "Botany" names an allegory rather than a garden or laboratory scene. The print belongs to a large group of allegorical photographs from the 1890s, when studio work was often staged to personify subjects such as the arts, seasons, and sciences for homes and schools. Curtis & Cameron, the Boston firm that copyrighted it, was one of several publishers selling such pictures to a middle-class market that wanted decorative and instructive images. The subject also reflects the period's growing interest in nature study, which was gaining a place in American classrooms.
