Plate IV of the botany volume from the Pacific Railroad Surveys shows *Pinus ponderosa*, the ponderosa pine, a western species whose tall trunks and long needles set it apart from the eastern pines familiar to most Americans at the time. The lithograph was prepared for House Executive Document 129, issued during the 33rd Congress, when federal survey parties were mapping possible routes for a transcontinental railroad across the West. Botanical plates like this one gave Eastern readers and officials their first detailed look at the region's plants, and many of the species they documented had never been described in print before.
