A wood engraving by Fritz Eichenberg shows Heathcliff, the brooding outsider of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel, caught in a moment of anguish. Eichenberg, a German-born printmaker who settled in the United States in the late 1930s, produced many illustrations for classic novels, and he worked in wood engraving, cutting fine lines into the block to build tone and texture. Here the medium suits the novel's stormy, windswept mood, with its bleak Yorkshire moors and its themes of obsession and suffering.
