The title on this 1909 glass negative, "Czarewitch," is the English form of *tsarevich*, the title given to the heir to the Russian throne, but the Bain News Service caption information is unverified, so the actual subject is uncertain. The name was also used for racehorses and a racing event, so the picture may show a person, an animal, or a competition rather than the royal title. George Grantham Bain's New York agency sold news photographs from the early 1900s into the 1920s, often on small glass negatives like this one. Treat the label as a starting point and check the Library of Congress record for any corrections.
