This glass negative carries the title "King of Servia," the older English spelling of Serbia, though the record does not name which monarch is shown. The Bain News Service, the New York picture agency run by George Grantham Bain, produced news photographs of visiting dignitaries and public figures in the early twentieth century, and its captions were often written quickly for newspaper use. Serbia's kings in that era came from rival dynasties, so the identification deserves checking against other sources. With no date recorded, the sitter and the occasion remain open questions for researchers.
