The White House office lobby shown here dates from the years between 1889 and 1906, a stretch when the executive mansion was still working largely within its original 1800 building and was beginning to feel the strain of a growing federal workforce. Entrance halls like this one were where visitors, petitioners and staff gathered while waiting for an audience with the president or his secretaries. The photographer's view captures the people who filled these spaces during the Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland and William McKinley administrations, a useful glimpse of daily life inside the building before the major 1902 renovation reshaped its offices.
