Soviet soldiers are shown dismantling and loading industrial machinery from factories in Manchuria, the northeastern region of China, in 1946. The Soviet Union occupied Manchuria in the final weeks of World War II, and in the months that followed its forces systematically removed plants, equipment and materials, shipping them back to the USSR as war reparations. The photograph came from a U.S. Army Signal Corps caption card, and its details are unverified, so the exact site and date should be read with that in mind. It remains a record of one of the less-documented aftermaths of the war in East Asia.
