Held around 1901, the Concord State Fair is a reminder of how central these exhibitions were to rural life at the turn of the twentieth century. Fairs like this brought farm families, livestock breeders, and local merchants together to judge animals, show off crops and machinery, and trade news. Photographers were drawn to the crowds, the displays, and the barns and fairgrounds, which together record how agricultural communities gathered and showed what they produced. Look closely at the setting for clues about the scale of the event and the people who attended it.
