The Zao Jun, or Kitchen God, is the household deity this color woodcut depicts, and the record dates it to the 1920s. In Chinese folk belief, the Kitchen God watched over the family hearth and reported on each household to the Jade Emperor in heaven before the New Year. Families often pasted new printed images of him above the stove during the holiday season, then burned the old ones to send him off on his yearly journey. Prints like this one were part of that seasonal practice, so the picture reflects both religious devotion and the rhythms of domestic life.
