The caption on this glass negative reads "Wm. O'Brien," a name the Library of Congress notes is unverified and taken from the negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to sell pictures of people and events to newspapers. Its glass negatives record the early twentieth century in a wide range of subjects, from politics and sports to everyday city life. Because the record gives no date, the picture is best understood as a typical example of the agency's work from that era, with its exact context still open to research.
