A cakewalk was a dance contest in which couples strutted in pairs around a ring, and the winners took home a cake, so this poster's dancing pair is worth a closer look. The strutting, high-kicking figures reflect the style of Black social dance that white minstrel performers borrowed and exaggerated on American stages in the late 1800s. Posters like this one helped advertise the lively entertainment that drew crowds to vaudeville houses and traveling shows of the era. Look closely at the exaggerated poses, which show how the dance was packaged for popular audiences.
