The Dalles, on the Columbia River in north-central Oregon, was the Wasco County seat in 1884 and a shipping point for the wheat and wool grown in the interior valleys. The town sat at the edge of the Columbia Gorge, where the river's rapids forced cargo to be unloaded and carried around them, a portage that had drawn Native fishing and trading communities for centuries before settlers arrived. By the early 1880s the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company's line along the river was bringing rail traffic into town, linking local farms and warehouses to Portland and to the coast. Residents of the period knew The Dalles as a river town of commerce and county politics, with its former army post at Fort Dalles, abandoned in 1867, already a memory.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of The Dalles, Oregon, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
