Pendleton in 1890 was a wheat and stock town of frame and brick storefronts laid out along the Umatilla River in northeastern Oregon. Grain wagons rolled in from the dry plateau to the railroad warehouses, and the town's business houses, hotels, and livery stables depended on that seasonal traffic. The East Oregonian, the local newspaper whose publishing company issued this map, reported on the town's growth and its civic disputes from its own offices, which gives the view a local origin. Residents would have known their town first as a stopping point for freight and farm families, and the street grid drawn here shows how far the settlement had spread beyond its original core.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Pendleton, Oregon, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
