The Tinker to Evers to Chance trio is one of the most famous double-play combinations in baseball history, and this card sets the three Chicago Cubs infielders side by side rather than showing one player alone. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance played together on the Cubs in the early 1900s, when the team won four National League pennants and two World Series titles between 1906 and 1910. Their quick passing of the ball, celebrated in Franklin P. Adams's 1910 poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon," turned them into household names. Early cards like this one were often printed as tobacco or candy inserts, so they are worth a closer look for their small size and vintage design.
