Dr. John Storer's residence on Hollywood Boulevard is the subject here, and the drawing's title block identifies the client by name. It is a 1923 study of the front elevation with its surrounding landscaping, rendered in graphite and color pencil on Japanese paper. The house is among the Los Angeles works Frank Lloyd Wright designed in the 1920s, when he used precast decorative concrete blocks to build houses that could look both modern and rooted in the Southern California hillsides. Wright's drawings from this period show how he pictured a house within its site as much as its facade.
