A ruined chateau in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France is the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service titled from its own caption cards. The region lay near the Western Front and was fought over repeatedly during the First World War, so many of its country houses were left shattered by shelling. The record gives no date and the title is unverified, so the exact place and period call for further research. Bain's New York agency sold news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this one circulated widely.
